JAUN RODRIGUEZ CABRILLO Did you know that Juan Cabrillo was born in Portugal in the year of 1499, and also died in the year of 1543. When Jaun was a little boy he shipped to Havana then joined the mexican military forces. As he grew up and got into his older ages he mined for gold which made him a very rich man.
As he hit into his grownup ages he built three ships, San Salvador, Al Victoria, and San Miguel,which were not very easy to build.In 1542 on june 27th he set to the ocean from Navidad.As they were sailing they found new land and also named them.
The first island was San Diego bay, the next island that he discovered was san Salvador, then after the next discovered was bay de los fumes.So after that long day, when nght came he then discovered Santa Monica.
But as his voyage went on he had to turn back. Because as he was stepping off of the ship he stepped onto a rock and the rock was very big and he didn’t notice so therefore he fell and splintered his shin which caused him to die.

The monument commemorates and is named after one Jaun Cabrillo, the first European to explore the western coast of the USA-sailing north from mexico, rested there for a while before the expedition proceeded up the california coast,possibly as far as oregon.
